Would it help to persist the “add / show x more comments” state for a short time, or even provide an option of having all comments expanded fully by default. It would be less of an interruption.

I've found many times that whilst reading a long list of comments that I click on a link in a comment and then press the back button in the browser only to find that the list has shrunk again. This means that I then need to scroll down to the bottom and expand the list again and find my place

Open comment links in a new window or a new tab, so nothing happens to the page you're on. – rgettman Jun 20 '13 at 16:43
  • I quite often do that, but sometimes I forget, it's jarring to press the back button and find that the page isn't in the same state that I left it. I would argue that clicking on a link is the "natural" thing to do and pressing back to go back to where you were is too. Having to constantly open a new window or tab is an extra step. – user241462 Jun 20 '13 at 16:50
  • or just write a userscript – John Dvorak Jun 20 '13 at 16:50
  • @JanDvorak what is userscript and how do I use it? – user241462 Jun 20 '13 at 16:50
  • a userscript is a script that runs automatically when you reach a matching URL. There are some restrictions, but they're easy to work with. Look up: tampermonkey (chrome) or greasemonkey (firefox) – John Dvorak Jun 20 '13 at 16:53
  • Ew. There's no way from the GUI to load new comments without opening the reply box as well. – John Dvorak Jun 20 '13 at 17:24
