Watched Tags

To watch a tag, do one of the following:

  • In the tag’s tooltip, click on the "Watch Tag" button.
  • On the main page’s sidebar, click on Watch Tag
  • On the main page’s sidebar, click on edit next to Watched Tags
  • On /users/preferences, use the respective field in the Tags section.

Note that you can use wildcards in the latter three.

This has the following effects:

  • Questions with these tags become highlighted on the front page.
  • Questions with new activity are shown on stackexchange.com/filters.
  • In the review queues, questions from these tags are shown to you before other questions.
  • On Stack Overflow, this affects how questions are displayed on the home page (Recent questions) and the various questions pages.

Also known as followed tags; formerly known as interesting tags and favorite tags.

Ignored Tags

To ignore a tag, do one of the following:

  • In the tag’s tooltip, click on the "Ignore Tag" button.
  • On the main page’s sidebar, click on edit next to Favorite Tags.
  • On /users/preferences, use the respective field in the Tags section.

Note that you can use wildcards in the latter two.

This has the following effects:

  • By default, questions with these tags are shown faded; they are still visible but less prominent. It is possible to hide them completely, for more details see: How do I hide posts matching my ignored tags?
  • On Stack Overflow, this affects how questions are displayed on the home page (Recent questions) and the various questions pages.

Subscribing to a tag

To subscribe to a tag:

  • Click the subscribe button in the tag’s tooltip.

This will cause you to receive mails about activity in those tags.

Note that you can also obtain RSS feeds of recent activity on a tag at various places.

  • > "This will cause you to receive mails about activity in those tags." I would not subscribe because the last thing I'd want is more email. – WRX Dec 6 '16 at 14:53

@WillowRex: Well, then don’t do it. Since that’s the only effect of subscribing to a tag, this function was not made for you. It looks as if favouring/following tags is more your kind of thing. – Wrzlprmft Dec 6 '16 at 15:00
  • yes, and I also had no idea what they were for before this. So thanks! – WRX Dec 6 '16 at 15:44

BEAUTIFUL! Except the User/Preferences thing must have gotten changed at some point, it's hidden a little now. I had to go into my profile, then click "Edit Profile And Settings", then on the left side under Site Preferences there's a Settings link and it's in there. – Johnny Bones Aug 23 '17 at 11:28
