Are questions from the SE network randomly displayed in the "Hot Network Questions" list, or is there any specific criteria for the questions which are displayed there?

    They are picked randomly on each page load from the full list of 100 hot questions, available here. The dupe has the formula used to calculate the hotness points, you can see each question's points as a tooltip. – Shadow Wizard Dec 11 '14 at 19:55

    @ShadowWizard worth adding that details of randomizing are laid out here: "...hot questions list is basically a list of 100 or so questions on the server. All we are doing is randomizing the list of 100 before we pull some off the top instead of pulling the top X every time." – gnat Dec 12 '14 at 10:19
