I'm on Linkedin and I've seen that when I submit an application for a job I get a notification if the author of the ad reads my application.

The message is nothing but an email sent by Linkedin in which they say that the recruiter has seen your resume.

Does this feature even exist on Stack Overflow Careers? I think it could be very useful for the users.

+1 one question for you, at LinkedIn upon submitting your CV you get "inbox" notification right? Also, what does message looks like? – HackerKarma Aug 9 '15 at 19:17

This is not currently a feature on Stack Overflow Careers, but we want it to be. There are some complications with employers who use external applicant tracking systems (so we don't see/receive any feedback when they view your application), but for the ones where we can, we want to get you this feedback.

No promises yet on timing, but this is in our plans.

+1 for the status-planned. What do you mean by "external applicant tracking systems"? I thought employers login at SO Careers site to see the applicants – HackerKarma Aug 10 '15 at 4:36
  • Thank you for your answer ;-) – Ema.jar Aug 10 '15 at 6:49

@HackerKarma Some employers choose not to use Careers' ATS (applicant tracking system, the interface from which employers can see applications, read cover letters, CVs, etc). When they choose to use an external ATS, we currently don't know if they opened your application or not. – Aurélien Gasser Aug 10 '15 at 9:57
  • @AurélienGasser Thank you. I'm still thinking on the "external ATS" part where it gets an access to SO Careers CV. – HackerKarma Aug 11 '15 at 0:17

@HackerKarma All it means is that they post a job on our site, but when you apply, instead of the application going through Careers, it goes to a site like Jobvite or Greenhouse. Sometimes you'll notice this as an applicant because you'll be taken off Careers to apply in a different system. At this point, we lose the ability to tell who's viewed what etc... Although we are working on some integrations with certain ATS providers that will make this better. – Will Cole Aug 11 '15 at 21:37
  • @WillCole Thank you for the update and glad to know that you're working on integrations with few ATS providers. These key metrics are very important for both i.e. Candidate and SE. I would even track (I'm sure SO Careers is probably doing it already) the "apply" button click. – HackerKarma Aug 11 '15 at 22:08
