On the sidebar of Stack Overflow, I see job offerings. They are based on my IP address, which is currently Spain, but I live in the Netherlands, which is listed in my profile. I am not interested in jobs in Spain. I am interested in jobs in the Netherlands (or anywhere else in Europe and not limited to Spain).

I suggest the jobs site change its policy in posting these job ads, or give me an opportunity to specify what I am interested in.

From 2013! Promising an improvement:

The good news is, we're working on making our ads better! This is part of a large project to make ads more relevant and bringing the right candidate and the right employer together.

That must be a very complex project, taking already two years. It is time that the Stack Exchange coders focused on this problem again.

At that time (in 2013) it looked like we were going to do improvements to ads based off of the Careers data you provided. What we found were bigger gains tailoring and improving the ads for everyone (rather than just those with Careers Profiles) That was a very complex project, and where our focus has been since that OP.

We've just recently begun some tests on the Careers side to improve our recommendations based off of your profile data. There's a whole lot to work there, and location is one of the features we'll look at. What we see working on the Careers experiments, we'll bring over to the ad side of Stack Overflow.

I do agree though. If you take the time to specify locations you're interested in, the ads should respect that. We're getting there, and while I don't have an exact date yet, you won't be waiting 2 years this time.

Update We are indeed putting this on the Ad Server monthly plan. We'll update on the 23rd, but we have people on it.

  • status-planned then? – Shadow The Dragon Wizard Oct 26 '15 at 13:02
  • @ShadowWizard Status - I need to talk to the team in our normal call tomorrow to make sure it's actually being planned. Will update tomorrow afternoon EST. – Will Cole Oct 26 '15 at 13:13
  • Cheers, better safe than sorry - there are 4+ years old status-planned bug/requests here of MSE so agree it's better to make sure first it's really planned. :-) – Shadow The Dragon Wizard Oct 26 '15 at 13:17
