A question gets a close vote as a possible duplicate of X, and the automatic comment shows up.

I then close vote it as a duplicate of Y, but my "Possible duplicate of [...]" comment doesn't appear.

Is this expected behavior?

I want to test it thoroughly here (I might have just gotten mixed up): Formatting Sandbox
But that would mean flagging Formatting Sandbox as a duplicate of some random question - multiple times!
Is that OK?

Maybe it's a duplicate of 'Possible duplicate' comment not appearing for questions with deleted comments containing the link , but I am not if that's the same case.
Specifically, my question is:
Was there a different "possible duplicate of.." comment already, when the user tried adding one?
If not, it might be a different bug.

This question was marked as an exact duplicate of an existing question.

  • Not expected and the comment should be generated, do you have a link to the question? – Cai Dec 28 '16 at 14:34
  • I don't! I'm trying to remember it, or test it again... – Daniel Springer Dec 28 '16 at 14:35

Is this about a php date related question you flagged for closure on SO? A gold badge holder closed it as a duplicate (as the comment was generated) - when that happens (a post is closed as a dupe) the Community user removes the "possible duplicate" comments from the post. – Jon Clements Dec 28 '16 at 14:54
  • @JonClements where can I see my activity? And it looks like that's an answer.. I think. – Daniel Springer Dec 28 '16 at 15:14
  • Go to your profile on that site, the activity tab and then on the "impact" box on the right, click helpful flags. You'll see the question you're (I think) talking about near the top. You won't be able to see the comment anymore, but if that's the one you're asking about that's what happened to the comment. – Jon Clements Dec 28 '16 at 15:21
  • Got nothing to do with the other close vote. There was a comment linking to the question you chose, which got deleted at some point. (e.g. maybe the close voter regretted the decision, retracted the vote, and deleted the comment.) – Shadow Dec 28 '16 at 16:10
