This has appeared as the dropdown on my review queue button today:

review dropdown screenshot

I can't find out anything about it.

  • What does it mean?
  • Why aren't there any review queues available to me?
  • How long it's going to stay there?! :(

Where are you seeing this? What site? Screenshots will help. – Oded Apr 7 '17 at 14:13
  • You can't review until you reach 2k; you haven't reached that yet. – zondo Apr 7 '17 at 14:15

I've been reviewing Triage, First posts, and two others (I'll check) for ages. Did the policy change? Look: stackoverflow.com/users/2532190/… – mayersdesign Apr 7 '17 at 14:16

@zondo - the "Access Review Queues" privilege is at 500 rep. – Oded Apr 7 '17 at 14:19
  • 1
Of course. I was thinking that everything started with suggested edits. Sorry, false alarm. – zondo Apr 7 '17 at 14:19
  • @Oded I have this same problem on raspberry pi stackexchange I have never reviewed before – User98764431 Oct 14 '17 at 0:52
  • you can find more informations about the ban in the review page (<site>/review) – Fabrizio Mar 20 '18 at 11:20

I have just noticed the same thing appear on my account, suspiciously a day after I replied to a chat with someone who disagreed with my vote on a review.. Have I been banned from reviewing based on one disagreement? I thought the whole point of community reviewing was that the correct / community favoured result will prevail in the end.. – EM-Creations Apr 26 '18 at 15:30
  • Agree it's better to close the other as duplicate of this one. Reopened. – Shadow The Vaccinated Wizard Sep 20 '18 at 10:08

This is a crappy way to treat folks that are trying to help the community. 💩 At least fix your messaging. Put a link to stackoverflow.com/review next to the message at least. I've been banned for 3 days. I don't know if I'll start back up after the ban or not. Right now my efforts are not feeling very appreciated. – Dan Jan 25 '19 at 15:54

I am getting this message for 3-4 days. No idea why it happened. – A J Jan 29 '19 at 1:45

If I go to stackoverflow.com/review, it shows me a link to a review which I approved, along with another follow, but another person rejected. The edit added some links (which seem legit) to some extra info. So now I'm not sure if this is the review that got me banned, and if so, why it got me banned (i.e. what was wrong with the edit). – HardcoreHenry Aug 16 '19 at 15:15

I took a 15-day ban for choosing "Looks OK" for a valid question. Taking the most recent reports in other comments, I believe that the ban system is not well balanced. – Dherik Apr 30 '20 at 19:53

I'm now 2-months into my 7-day ban... I suspect the ban system is not well coded either. – charles-allen Jun 4 '20 at 6:00

It appears that you have hit a review ban - too many bad reviews (i.e. - rejected reviews).

This will expire in about an hour or so - be sure to review more carefully ;)

  • 25
OH wow, that's weird. I hadn't even reviewed today, I suppose something lagged. It has been all day, and I didn't think my record was very bad. Do you know this as a FACT or is it a guess? (I mean have to literally checked my account) - Thanks – mayersdesign Apr 7 '17 at 14:18
  • 6
I know this as a fact - I took a look (I am a developer, so have access). It is entirely possible that the review rejections happened well after you have reviewed, the ban would only go into effect at that point. – Oded Apr 7 '17 at 14:20
  • 3
OK. Oh well, I will wait it out. Thanks for your response. Thanks twice if you lift the ban! haha. It is Friday, and my record really isn't bad! (Well I don't think so) ;) – mayersdesign Apr 7 '17 at 14:21
  • @mayersdesign did you not notice the banner about failing an audit and which one it was a couple of days ago? :-/ – Jon Clements Apr 7 '17 at 16:08
  • 2
@Jon Clements Yes I saw that, it was a tough audit (imho) I got confused with the markup change on a documentation edit. I was banned for 24 hours, but that disappeared and was replaced by this. Before it had a countdown of sorts, but this new message has nothing like that. – mayersdesign Apr 7 '17 at 16:10
  • Incidentally it just came back and it looks different - literally different styling, so I suppose it was being updated (the queue button) – mayersdesign Apr 7 '17 at 16:11

I think it would be really good if it had an explanation for how long the user is banned to review posts. – Red fx Nov 15 '17 at 14:15
  • 31
If you navigate to: stackoverflow.com/review it say (in my case): Your review on https://stackoverflow.com/review/low-quality-posts/XXX and https://stackoverflow.com/review/low-quality-posts/XXX wasn't helpful. Please do not edit non-answers. Come back on Oct 19 at 4:12 to continue reviewing. – Fernando Molina Sep 20 '18 at 1:22

Oded's first comment implies this is not (only) the cause of failed audits. Jon Clements talks about failing an audit, not multiple. – Glorfindel Nov 8 '18 at 22:18
  • Its been a three days but not yet updated – Ashish Kamble Oct 22 '19 at 5:05

The review system banning is seriously broken. I got banned based on a bad triage. However, three other persons made the same call (requires editing), so it wasn't that bad warranting a ban. Is that how you encourage people to do triaging? – Jari Turkia Mar 3 '20 at 7:08
  • 5
The message must include a link to stackoverflow.com/review . Without it the reviewer doesn't have any info and can't improve. – ofirule Mar 21 '20 at 18:52
  • 2
Not only seems it broken but it puts you right into action with no explanation, for example i wanted to tag a post as out of place but the closest i could do is flag it as spam or innapropiate for admin action which actually sounds really harsh, kinda like calling the police for a nude pic, not like hey this is a fixing a broken printer shit, not about coding. many actions are missing and the edition options are just bad. i also have nothing on my queue and am i supposed to guess why? – Mr-Programs Apr 29 '20 at 7:18

I 100% agree with Jari Turkia, There was one post that was vague and asking alot, I put requires editing, the other two people also put requires editing, the person who got it closed it, and I'm ban for like more than two weeks. Honestly it seems like the guy who closed it made a bit of a 'jerk' call just to close the question because there was some merit in it – vasmos May 9 '20 at 18:06
  • Hey @oded, could you take a look at mine? I am not aware of having a bad review, but, it has been 3 days, and I still don't have access. Thanks a lot! – 10 Rep May 24 '20 at 3:47

You had too many bad / rejected reviews. This oftentimes is the result of failing the one's Stackoverflow places in the review queues to test your attention.

To see when your ban will be lifted visit the Review Overview page.

Thanks for the Review Overview link, from which I find out I did somehow carelessly accepted one unintentional slightly harmful bad edit. – Tiw Feb 3 '19 at 12:40

I was rejected for 8 days for placing a "Requires Editing" on one post rather than closing. The funny thing is the other two reviewers also used "Requires Editing". Guess we are all banned. Seems if 3 do the same review on the same post, then SO needs to do something better on their end. – Marcy Jan 23 '20 at 19:09
  • @Marcy was that the first mistake of you've done more before? – Tiago Martins Peres 李大仁 Jan 23 '20 at 19:12
  • @TiagoMartinsPeres, I'm not sure. I only recall being told once but have had several "good" notifications. – Marcy Jan 23 '20 at 19:25
  • 1
Oh yes, that's why. It happens, no big deal, just try to be a little more careful. If you think it's a case worth mentioning, then go to Meta and ask a question about it. Most likely there's already such case if you dig well enough... – Tiago Martins Peres 李大仁 Jan 23 '20 at 19:45

I discovered this week that there is one more situation where this happens: if you exhaust your daily vote limit. As soon as you do this, the review queues close, at least the basic ones that are available to lower-reputation users. I suspect this is the case because one of the preferred tasks you can perform in most review queues is to upvote or downvote posts.

To ensure if it is because of this or because of bad reviews, you can just head to the stack reviews page , and it will show what happened! – M.K Feb 15 '19 at 8:49
  • 5
Wow. "Come back on May 28 at 10:25 to continue reviewing." Because I set something as 'needing editing' instead of 'unsalvageable'. Two other reviewers indicated 'Looks Okay'/and a third indicated 'unsalvagable'. I'm not going to waste time on the queues anymore. – RyanNerd Apr 7 '20 at 8:37

The advice in the accepted answer ("review more carefully") is not actionable.

To uncover something actionable I went to the review page as referenced in many comments here. That page showed one bad edit, not many, and that the ban was for four days, not one hour.

When I looked into it a little more more I found that on that review I and one other reviewer had said "Looks OK", but three others said "Requires Editing".

Actionable advice: err on the side of enforcing high-quality posts, which is what all the guidance says. In my particular case I'll be more inclined to vote "Requires Editing", which I now realize I haven't used very often.

I'm in a similar situation. I had one bad review in triage, and am now banned for a whole month. Seems a bit harsh for just one bad review. – Linda Apr 15 '20 at 13:53
  • 3
Same situation here, one bad review with three people saying it needs editing and two others saying it looks OK. Obviously I was one of those that said it looks okay, I've been banned for two months. – Luke Alderton Apr 23 '20 at 12:15

Myself and one other person triaged a post. I believe the post was not great but was OK as is. The other reviewer - with a lower reputation - said the post needed editing. Result - I was banned for a month. Time for me to stop contributing my time and effort! BTW, the same unedited post got many comments and two decent answers, one being accepted. – fpmurphy Apr 23 '20 at 18:09

I was banned for one whole month! I think I should probably stop wasting time on Triage – 10 Rep May 26 '20 at 16:12
