Lets try printing a single backslash in a code block.
\
Works fine in answers. Lets try in comments below.
This is one code block with a backslash: \
and this is another one \
and this is a code block with other characters abc
.
This is another code block with a backslash \
and then one with an escaped backtick abc \
abc`
Mostly for comment testing and such. Feel free to test your comments here as well.

@TinyGiant - Unicode. Very nice. That was what the post regarding to strikethrough in comments alludes to as well. I was kind of hoping it was still available with some sort of shortcut here. Thanks for sharing though :)– Travis JAug 18, 2015 at 6:10

Whoever is voting to delete this Answer as VLQ, can you consider what the question is: "Formatting sandbox"– JamesAug 18, 2015 at 18:43
Bug in comments formatting
Bold nested in italic is rendered as plain italic without the bold markup being interpreted in comments. See the examples:
Case 1: Not working
_Italic and **bold**_
is rendered as Italic and **bold**. It doesn't interpret the bold markup.
Case 2: Not working
_Italic and **bold** _
is rendered as _Italic and bold _. It doesn't interpret the italic markup.
Case 3: Working
_Italic and **bold** followed by more italic_
is rendered correctly: Italic and bold followed by more italic
Bug in posts formatting
Case 1b: working
_Italic and **bold**_
is rendered as Italic and bold. It doesn't interpret the bold markup.
Case 2b: Not working
_Italic and **bold** _
is rendered as _Italic and bold _. It doesn't interpret the italic markup.
Case 3
_Italic and **bold** followed by more italic_
is rendered correctly: Italic and bold followed by more italic

But if you use <br />
there are no issues.

This works very strange; initially is does not work, with repeated edits it 'sticks.'
