Testing if links to YouTube are actively inhibited and this bug is reproducible (Preview doesn't match actual answer). Seems like that's not the case (same result without this header).
'Bugger' is used a lot in this corner of the world (Australia/NZ). It is probably about the same 'politeness level' as damn it (and was even the running gag word in a nationally shown Toyota commercial) - though I expect this would be less so if people looked up the definition.
As the link shows, it is definitely used in the type of situations you describe.
Just experimenting with italic code in comments — there's nothing to see here, folks; please move on!
Sample sentence
The design of
_Static_assert(
constant-expression
,
string-literal
);
is the format you want.
That shows the effect I want to achieve, but in comments rather than the body of a question. (I already know how to do it in a question; the trouble is, the same markdown does not work in a comment. That's a nuisance, to be polite about it.)
The code for that example is:
The design of `_Static_assert(`_`constant-expression`_`,`_`string-literal`_`);` is the format you want.
It is almost exactly what I want; I wouldn't mind the spaces around the italics being smaller, but the information is a continuous block of 'code'.
Unfortunately, that doesn't work so well in comments. I'm experimenting with what might work in comments to this answer. These options work fine in a question body.

U+FEFF Zero-Width Non-Breaking Space
The design of
_Static_assert(

is the format you want.
The material above originally had U+FEFF code points before the leading underscore of constant-expression
and after the trailing underscore (similarly for string-literal
). This was shown/verified by copying the material before it was submitted. After the text was submitted, the U+FEFF parts were gone. I don't know whether Firefox (44.0.2) on Mac OS X 10.11.3 did the damage or whether SO did the damage.

Note: copying the text from the question or the comment preserves the Unicode characters U+2060. It is not clear whether the U+FEFF survives normalization — nor where the problem occurs if it does not. Commented Feb 21, 2016 at 4:44

This is an answer which shows that using 2 spaces doesn't format as code:
This is a line with two spaces before it.
This is a line with four spaces before it.
And I couldn't resist adding a line with two spaces before it,
cheating with a <pre>
tag ;-)

...but you know 4 spaces are documented, right? meta.stackoverflow.com/editing-help– ArjanCommented Sep 14, 2010 at 18:55

The parenthesis does not come off anymore: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Closure_(computer_programming)
Try escaping the parenthesis with a backslash: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Closure_(computer_programming)
Looks good in the preview, but watch out!
“the C PreProcessor” comes out differently as well.
