Aight, so there are no code indentation scripts out there, so I'm gonna make one. This answer serves as a testing answer for it while I'm working on it, so I don't do like with some of my earlier scripts...

This might also not be possible with all the languages out there, but I don't have anything better to do, sooo....

Here we go:

Markdown HTML

    <!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
 <title>Horrible indentation:tm:</title>
  <metadata name="hide"
    </head>
<style>
         <!-- borrowed the style part here from https://www.w3schools.com/html/html_head.asp -->
          body {background-color: powderblue;}
          h1 {color: red;}
          p {color: blue;}
         </style>
<html>

That also hurt to type :')

Markdown Java

public class MyHorriblyIndentedClass{
            public static final String action = "RUN AWAY!";
  public static void main(String[] args){
   assert args.length > 0;
       String arg = args[0];
   try {
    callMyFunction();
         } catch (TerribleIndentationException e) {
     throw new RuntimeException(e);
   }
}
}

Indented Java

public class MyHorriblyIndentedClass{
            public static final String action = "RUN AWAY!";
  public static void main(String[] args){
   assert args.length > 0;
       String arg = args[0];
   try {
    callMyFunction();
         } catch (TerribleIndentationException e) {
     throw new RuntimeException(e);
   }
}
}

The actual rendered output is identical, but the post differences changes some stuff. Regex anyone?

As if it wasn't horrible enough already, why don't we do C++?

C++ indentation in quote

Copy-pasted from this SO answer (written by https://stackoverflow.com/users/2752075/holyblackcat), but with partially destroyed indentation. Quotes also add an extra layer of complication (in theory). Not to forget about lists.

 #include <cstddef>
    #include <iostream>
  #include <tuple>
 #include <type_traits>
   #include <utility>
        #include <vector>

      template <typename T, typename ...P, std::size_t ...I>
   bool increment_tuple_impl(T q, std::tuple<P...> &t, std::index_sequence<I...>)
  {
                auto lambda = [&](auto index) -> bool
        {
         auto &elem = std::get<index.value>(t);
               elem++;
          if (elem == q)
                     {
                    elem = 0;
            return 0;
                         }
             else
             {
            return 1;
            }
           };

       return (lambda(std::integral_constant<std::size_t, I>{}) || ...);
  }

Why not do

C++ indentation in lists

  • Just some text to start the list

        #include <iostream>
    int main() {
             std::cout << "Did you try turning it off and back on again?" << std::endl;
      throw "someStr";
          }

Isn't this kind of a phishing risk? Should hyperlinks be required to not look like valid URLs unless they look like the specific URL they actually point to? www.somevalidlookingurl.com

What happens when you use enough quote formatting?

This:

turns into this:

Markdown formatting of the last one:

    @rene no, they are not deleted, they are moved by SE employee, probably Shog – Shadow Wizard Oct 7 '17 at 22:00
  • @ShaWizDowArd I didn't know answers could move. How does he do that? – rene Oct 7 '17 at 22:03
  • @rene probably direct database queries, generated with some script. There's no trace for this. – Shadow Wizard Oct 7 '17 at 22:21

    Did you see the last line of the question? It says Answers will occasionally be moved to the Sandbox archive when there are too many of them. – Meta Bug Wizard Oct 8 '17 at 1:20
  • @iDebug I see, but as far as I remember this is the second move in the last year. I.e. too often when the first one happened after ~8 years of the post existence. – αλεχολυτ Oct 8 '17 at 4:54
  • @alexolut The first move was very late: May 16, 2017, when Shog9 realized that the SB should be cleaned up (450+ answers). – Meta Bug Wizard Oct 8 '17 at 5:02
  • Well, I'd say the "big move" on May 2017 was kind of test. Since it went so well, Shog realized it can be done much more frequently, before people start complaining the sandbox breaks their browser, and hence they can't use it... /cc @iDebug – Shadow Wizard Oct 8 '17 at 7:44

    That said, I do agree links should be preserved as it's helpful in bug reports. – Shadow Wizard Oct 8 '17 at 7:45

    well, not plain waffles. I like #7waffles and #13waffles. And I must say, wiki waffles are not too bad with enough syrup and whipped cream. – Pikachu the Watermelon Wizard Dec 18 '18 at 4:13

content removed due to breaking the page for everyone

  • Contrary to what was said in the edits, this image is only loaded once, and doesn't "spam" the server. – Benoît Pilatte Mar 12 at 10:07
  • Extremely annoying, I couldn't tell where the post ended. – Mari-Lou A Mar 15 at 12:22
  • Rolling back cause well... it breaks the page for everyone else who wants to use it. If you need to test something, and it potentially causes quality of life issues, kindly clean up after yourself ;) – Journeyman Geek Mar 15 at 12:29
