Currently it's 200 chars if you mod-flag a comment, 500 if you mod-flag a question or answer. It's impossible to "Be specific and detailed!" in 200 characters, and a challenge even in 500. Suggest a much higher limit, like 1500.

Alternately: When I run into the max it's because of links to other questions/answers/comments. Perhaps make the limit 500 in both comment and post flags, but don't count in-network links against that limit.

  • In those cases where the comment flag space too small I normally switch to flag the answer, explaining there what is wrong with a specific comment. – rene Nov 19 '17 at 18:24
  • Just curious - how often do you run out of characters? – Journeyman Geek Nov 21 '17 at 0:05
  • @JourneymanGeek: I haven't kept track, probably 1 in 10? Usually when I have to cite other questions and/or describe behavior while being "specific and detailed." :-) – T.J. Crowder Nov 21 '17 at 7:23
  • I don't know if that was already the case when this question got posted, but I just stumbled about this problem too, and found out that you can actually use some kind of relative path instead of the full URL to link other posts. I thought mods would be able to decode /a/post_id/answer_id/ does point to https://stackexchange-site.com/a/post_id/answer_id. But it seems the system does it by itself (at least an anchor was created in the flag-summary window). – Kaiido Aug 21 '18 at 6:44

Please do not increase to 1500. If something needs a 1500 character explanation as to why it shouldn't be on the site, then it is probably controversial and you would better turn to meta to get a more detailed response from moderators and the community. You can include the key points needed in a flag explanation in a small number of characters. If there are many flags then the last thing I want to read is 1500 character essays on each of them. While I recognize that there may be situations where a longer and more detailed explanation could be provided, you can usually be detailed and specific without waxing over the minutia of why and what and how the particular comment or answer or question is offending or inappropriate, and without the need to take many minutes to write, read, and digest the whole point of the explanation which, in very good likelihood, could be contained within two or three sentences, but which, because I have 1500 characters available, I very much want to get my full "money's worth" and use every character available to me, recognizing that there will be a small number of cases in which I want to say more but which the unfortunate limit prevents me from doing so, and by the time I get to 1500 characters, which is now imminent, I feel there is little left for me to say except that you have wasted a minute or two of your time because I felt obligated, for the sake of all moderators reading flag comments, to provide that little bit of superfluous explanation.

Count:1500 characters

"... like 1,500..." :-) Perhaps 1,500 is too high; 200 (comment flags) is definitely too low. 500 (on questions/answers) can easily be too low, for instance when you need to link to other questions (for instance, sockpuppets). Perhaps it should be 500 not counting links. – T.J. Crowder Nov 19 '17 at 17:33
  • Funnily enough, I usually want to be as terse as possible in a flag, whether I have 500 chars or not. – T.J. Crowder Nov 19 '17 at 17:35
  • Does this or dosen't this include the "Count:1500 characters?" TLDC... – Journeyman Geek Nov 20 '17 at 8:39
