Occasionally, I write a comment about an answer or question; then the author makes an edit, telling me "@einpoklum: see edit" or something similar. At this point, and if my comment is not otherwise relevant, I delete it, and flag the author's comment as "no longer needed". But really, I don't want to bother moderators with this task; I actually want to just tell the author s/he can remove the comment. Now, I could do that with another comment of mine, but that would kind of defeat the point.

I wish there could be a "tell author this is no longer needed"-type flagging option.

  • @Monica If not a dupe. – πάντα ῥεῖ May 19 '18 at 9:13
  • @πάνταῥεῖ: Hey, it's not a dupe... that suggestion is for both moderation and validation, my suggestion is to not require moderator action. – einpoklum May 19 '18 at 9:18
  • Do you want to be nagged by anyone who flag your comment when it's borderline NLN (you think it's not, they think it is)? Should they get flag ban if this is abused? – Meta Andrew T. May 19 '18 at 9:54
  • You actually have a point. Guys please consider leaving the down vote reason. One only improves from his mistake. Remember we all are here to learn and grow. – Rishav May 19 '18 at 18:23
  • @hey: This flagging option can be suggested for use / forced to be used only when flagger has deleted a comment of his/her own and suggests deletion in that context. – einpoklum May 19 '18 at 18:42
  • @Rishav: You're new here... SO is famous for downvote storms with no justifications (especially on meta.) – einpoklum May 19 '18 at 18:43
  • @einpoklum could you describe on the question a more concrete step on how this should be implemented? Did you mean that when you flag it as obsolete, you also have to add the reference to your deleted comment to make it a valid flag? What if the flagger deletes their unrelated comments? (alternatively, threaded comments can fix this issue, but I don't see this will come soon) – Meta Andrew T. May 20 '18 at 3:37
  • @einpoklum Yea I'm kinda don't hop into meta that often although I am using SO since 2015 or 16 I guess and have seen lots of questions with down votes without any reason. (Not The un-salvageable ones ofc) – Rishav May 20 '18 at 4:49
