They're shiny. They glitter like a teen vampire in daylight. What more do you need? – Gnoupi May 11 '10 at 8:43
  • You get to have more badges. – dmckee May 11 '10 at 14:05

Only to the extent that badges encourage new behaviors that are both positive for the community and for the user.

The happy feeling you get when you know that some machine somewhere values what you've done.

If the person asking a question has too few badges, and it takes more than a few minutes to answer the question, they may get less answers.

  • I strongly disagree with this answer. – SLaks May 11 '10 at 16:15
  • @bmargulies, I think having no badges or only 1 or 2 may have a effect, I agree that once someone has more then a few badges it will not have an effect – Ian Ringrose May 13 '10 at 14:23
