Why does it have to overflow in a direction? And why to the right?

Who was the person behind the logo design? Maybe he/she can answer this.

That's only part of the picture.

It walks down stairs.

It was the result of a design contest; the winner was Peter Borlace

This sounds way too sensible to be the right answer. – gnostradamus Jun 22 '10 at 15:11
  • Deserves at least one upvote though ;-) – David Z Jun 22 '10 at 15:19

oh... a serious answer, way to ruin the fun! – juan Jun 22 '10 at 15:19

Well, I don't know Borlace's motivation behind it; any of the other answers here could very well be the reason he had it overflow right :) – Michael Mrozek Jun 22 '10 at 15:22
  • Also, I din't know there was voting for choosing the site name. Interesting. – Lazer Jun 22 '10 at 17:19
  • @Lazer It's surprising/impressive how much of the site is the result of community decisions and voting – Michael Mrozek Jun 22 '10 at 20:17
  • @Michael Mrozek: yes, surprising and impressive. – Lazer Jun 23 '10 at 7:08

It actually overflows to the left; the picture is taken from behind.

  • Then why does it overflow to the left? – juan Jun 24 '10 at 0:33

@Juan That's an entirely different issue. Please do not add new questions as comments or answers; instead use the "Ask Question" link on the top right of this page. See the FAQ for details. – balpha Jun 24 '10 at 6:59

Because the stack doesn't want to overflow to the wrong.

It's a slinky ending in the box.

  • ha ha +1 for learning me it's called a slinky in english – DrDro Jun 23 '10 at 8:41
  • @DrDro what is it called where you're from? – Jared Harley Jun 23 '10 at 13:13

Literally translated I used to call it: "you know that thing with fluo rainbow colors that goes down the stairs". But you made me check and it appears it's also called a slinky here in france... – DrDro Jun 23 '10 at 13:44

also, it should be "teaching me" @DrDro – juan Jun 23 '10 at 20:42
  • This actually makes more sense since the coloration indicates energy (gray being least active since it has come to a stop, orange being most active) – andrewtweber Jun 13 '13 at 1:15

Everything flows to the right (in this universe)

  • What's in the (apparently funny) picture? – mmyers Jun 22 '10 at 14:51

@mmyers If you sort the answers by newest, the bottom four posts seem to topple over to the right side. The snapshot was taken before any comments were introduced. – Grace Note Jun 22 '10 at 14:56

Isn't it falling forwards, but the image is captured from the side?

Because it was hit by an invisible pink unicorn that came running from the right

  • 4
Wouldn't that be "from the left"? – gnostradamus Jun 22 '10 at 14:51
  • 3
No, "from the right", then the container moves "to the left" and the contents fall "to the right" – juan Jun 22 '10 at 14:59
  • 1
Maybe if it was a very tiny unicorn. Or a very tall stack. – Michael Todd Jun 22 '10 at 15:07
  • 2
It is really tiny actually – juan Jun 22 '10 at 15:18
  • Do invisible pink unicorns have colorless green dreams? – Pops Jun 23 '10 at 20:00

"That's what she said!"

...(someone had to say it)

Because it's on the left side of the logo.

1

Because the Earth is spinning counterclockwise.

1

Because the word "stack" has 5 letters (just like "right").

1

Because programming is art and uses the right side of the brain.

1

Because we're right!

I hear in the southern hemisphere it flows left.

Oh? I always heard that in the northern hemisphere it flowed left. – Pops Jun 23 '10 at 20:00
