Possible Duplicate:
Suggest userXYZ that they should choose a “real” name?

I see a lot of user{number} questions on the board. I understand that we're no longer infering username from openid, but shouldn't we at least ask the user if they want one?

It seems many users just don't understand that they have to edit their account to add a username.

Maybe even a bit of text that includes a link to their profile edit page to change their username, something..

Maybe i'm just the only one annoyed by it...

  • How could they not notice? They see their account name just like you do. It's pretty obvious that their name is user323097345023. – Cody Gray Jul 19 '11 at 8:33
  • @Cody Gray - I didn't say they didn't notice. Where did I say that? And no, it's not a duplicate, that question suggests notifying existing users to change their name. I'm suggesting that the registration process include the ability to change the name. I think it would be VERY annoying to users that deliberately use the anonymous name to constantly remind them. Yes, there is the orange bar at the top when a new user registers, but i think it's out of the registration context to the user and they don't really associate it. – Erik Funkenbusch Jul 19 '11 at 8:42
  • "Maybe even a bit of text that includes a link to their profile edit page to change their username, something.." Sounds like a duplicate to me. – Cody Gray Jul 19 '11 at 8:44
  • @Cody Gray - I'm talking about in the registration process, where they are focusing their attention.. not as a random yellow popup. – Erik Funkenbusch Jul 19 '11 at 8:45
