I have an Orange PAYG mobile, but I can't access Stack Overflow from it because the provider (Orange) has flagged the site as 'adult' content.

For me personally, this isn't too big an issue as I have a contract mobile too that does allow access—but I'm assuming it may be an issue for many (and not necessarily limited to the one Internet provider).

I requested a review of the site a few weeks ago, Orange replied today with:

Your request has been actioned and the content is confirmed as only suitable for customers over the age of 18.

No apparent appeals process... thanks a bunch, Orange!

I'm not sure if Stack Overflow is too bothered by this, but I thought it best to let you guys know. It seems unfair for anyone to prevent access to SO for that reason, as this is surely one of the least 'adult' or offensive sites on the Internet.

Interesting, considering that we already have a policy in favor of censoring offensive content: Are expletives allowed on SE sites?, Is the language “BrainF_ck” offensive?, What is the rationale behind the “no cursing” rule? Perhaps it's the subject matter itself that is only appropriate for 18+. Programming: No kids allowed. – Cody Gray Jul 22 '11 at 12:38

Seemingly Orange forbids anyone under 18 from learning... :S – Michael Jul 22 '11 at 12:40
  • @Cody, that's a filtering provider at least, not an ISP. – Michael Jul 22 '11 at 12:42
  • few kids out here. so definitely adult. @Mikaveli: accessing SO on transit? SO addict :) – naveen Jul 22 '11 at 12:52
  • @naveen. Two days at PaizoCon cost me my "Fanatic" badge. :'( – Michael Jul 22 '11 at 12:54
  • @Mikaveli: my cousins marriage cost me mine (at eighties!). now at 73 again. i know the feeling :) – naveen Jul 22 '11 at 12:59
  • Don't know what you guys are talking about. Time spent on public transportation and at weddings are the best times to browse Stack Overflow! Really helps to take away the boredom. @naveen – Cody Gray Jul 22 '11 at 13:08
  • @Cody Gray: i live in india where mobile net is still 2G at most of the places and so... – naveen Jul 22 '11 at 13:16
  • @Cody. I was trying to, but I'd brought the wrong mobile, lol. – Michael Jul 22 '11 at 13:26

@Cody Agreed, but my fiancee made me put the phone away when we got to the vows; she wouldn't even let me finish the answer I was writing – Michael Mrozek Jul 22 '11 at 14:21

Apparently the SE sites are included in the class of 'unmoderated social networking sites & chat'. so if the setting is set to Strict they will be blocked. You can change it to Moderate or Off to fix it (probably) ee.co.uk/help/safety-and-security/my-digital-life/… – Wilf Jun 2 '16 at 15:03
