Why do I need to prove my humanity?
No, logging in is not enough. A program can log in (there are plenty of web scrapers that do just that) - but a program will find it much harder than a human to solve captchas as well.

Don't force HTTPS on the signup page until the CAPTCHA can be loaded under HTTPS
The captcha is only displayed on rare occasions which is why I have missed this so far - sorry about that. … You can test this out on:
https://meta.stackoverflow.com/captcha (SSL)
and
https://meta.stackoverflow.com/captcha (no SSL) …
