I think this is a good idea. No, these are not videos. They are gifs in a smaller format. Gifs auto-play, these are just gifs that are higher quality and slightly longer. There are no ads, no sound, and it's becoming very popular on imgur and will most likely, render the .gif format obsolete. I think we should stick with the times and allow this feature in....

There's not much to it. :) XKCD provides comic data in JSON that we can easily consume, it's a comic that gets quoted a bunch in chat, and at one point a developer cared enough to write-up the parser for the onebox.

Unacceptable. Fixed with high priority.

I like this idea, but would take it one step further. ThinkGeek has fairly complete OpenGraph metadata on it, i.e.: <meta property="og:type" content="product"/> <meta property="og:title" content="Star Trek Cookie Cutters"/> <meta property="og:url" content="http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/ed0a/?cpg=fbl_ed0a"/> <meta property="og:image"...

User scripts to the rescue! Works exactly as specified above: Collapse: Expand: So far I've only tested this in Chrome but I expect it to work in any (sane) environment. I've thrown this together pretty quickly, so there may be a few gremlins. If you see anything that doesn't work in the wild, let me know - preferably with a reproducible example ;-) ...

Updated version from chat user Ascii-only: https://github.com/somebody1234/star-thumn Added a "lightbox" for viewing the images on left click without switching tabs Fixed a problem where the script does not load sometimes So... I built this! It's a userscript, direct install link: Click Here (Needs Greasemonkey on Firefox).

To get your SE link to "onebox" you must post it on its own line, as its own message. For your example your first line would be i18n astonishing problem: Send that and then as your second line put the link to your question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/24797758

Wikipedia has an API method that attempts to return the best image for a page. It might be worth investigating using that to select the image.

I have changed chat to accept up to 15-character subdomains for Wikipedias, and I've also added the dash. If I didn't miss any, zh-classical is the longest one, so this should catch all of them.

This icon is supplied by amazon.com at https://www.amazon.com/favicon.ico: The favicon is to be displayed with the URL in the address bar, next to shortcuts, etc. It is nominally supplied as a 16x16 image, which explains the pixelation when shown at 48x48: After some investigation: The ICO format allows for supplying several resolutions in the resource. ...

I've built a small C# library designed with this in mind: https://github.com/Zirak/CSOpenGraph It's mostly complete, but having no knowledge of what Stackoverflow uses internally, I pretty much picked the first Html parser which cropped up; however, with such a small thing, I'm sure it'll be a trivial change. As the README says, I've tested it on all sites ...

Embarrassingly late to this party, but: this should be fixed in a few minutes.

Damnit, Shog knows my weak spot. I wrote a quick 'n dirty userscript (source) to patch this until it's fixed properly. Tested in Chrome on the example in the question and the one that prompted the bounty, but it should work in Firefox too.

Regex, it's always the regex. Seriously now, the reason is a rogue trailing slash you have in the URL, which is not supposed to be there. If you browse to the ordinary question URL which is https://gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/257112/how-do-i-change-my-name-on-steam the comment links will onebox just fine, e.g. https://gaming.stackexchange.com/...

This should be resolved. Copying my answer from here: While debugging an issue on the Fortinet, we had to test something which resulted in some unintended consequences with DNS and lots of other things. It resulted in this service being unavailable, but it should be stable again soon.

As these things go, it wasn't that easy... but it's done and will be out in the next deployment: Support for multiple parameters (e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?&v=ieFVN-PKLSA) Support for shortened links (e.g. http://youtu.be/ieFVN-PKLSA) Support for fragments or parameters with start time (e.g. http://youtu.be/ieFVN-PKLSA?t=3s or http://www.youtube....

It seems to me this is because the onebox reads the wikitext of the page and then ignores any templates or special markup. So, for example: {{Nihongo|'''Mount Fuji'''|富士山|Fuji-san|extra={{IPA-ja|ɸɯꜜdʑisaɴ|IPA|Fuji-san.ogg}}}}, located on Honshu Island, is the highest [[mountain]] in [[Japan]] at {{Convert|3776.24|m|ft|0|abbr=on}}. is rendered as: , ...

Apparently, Wiktionary now works in chat. Enjoy! Although....apparently it doesn't work all that well -- see the follow-up question.

IACR's ePrint This would be super useful on Crypto.SE and possibly other sites where cryptography gets discussed (Math.SE, Security.SE, and the likes). For example, one of our users recently published a tutorial there. From the link you can extract title, author, abstract, etc and display it in chat.

Downside of the script from Tim is that when hovering over the link the broken link is shown. My script fixes the DOM. // ==UserScript== // @name Fix broken double links // @namespace http://stackoverflow.com/users/578411/rene // @version 0.1 // @description fix one-one-boxes // @author rene // @match *://chat.meta....

Wikiwand is a really nice plugin that beautifies wikipedia Wikipedia is beautiful, and oneboxes too. Use the Wikipedia url instead of using Wikiwand.

Twitter is supported currently, but Tweets with pictures don't show the image(s) in the one box. Please add support for tweeted images, so you don't have to click the tweet to get to them.

I've made a userscript to do this. The result? Exactly as you imagined :) It's based largely off my Github oneboxer, just modified to work for SoundCloud. It uses the SoundCloud API to get any relevant information and displays it in a pretty manner. This will only look good if the linked track has a description and possibly some tags; otherwise it will look ...

I've made a 'plugin' for this to be used with my custom onebox userscript at Stack Apps. It uses the arXiv API to get the title, author and abstract. The logo is from the Android app. The end onebox: It works for both links to the PDFs or just the abstract page You can install the custom onebox userscript from GitHub All you need to do then is paste the ...

The first thing that would be required would be an API method that accepted the id (1299 and 1859 in the above) or the full uri (any of the 4 links), and returned the data in a machine-processable format - something like the search response would be ideal, but the search does not accept ids (it does a title search). Technically we could scrape the html, but ...

This is possible, but you should not worry that people can view your deleted messages: it only works when you can actually see the content (here you can see the testing I did). As the message poster, you can see the history, so you can onebox the message. I, as a room owner of the Sandbox, can also see the history of a deleted message, so I can onebox it. ...

In general, the oneboxing will work in every case where the person posting the message permalink has access to the message's content. So, say, if you, in a public room, post a permalink to a message in a non-public room that you have access to, it will onebox (the reasoning being that you might as well copy & paste the content). This even works across ...

Chat has been updated to correctly onebox our new blog. Example: https://chat.meta.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/3648206#3648206
