This tag is for questions about tag synonyms (how they work, who can create them, etc). To request a tag synonym, ask on the per-site meta with the tag [synonym-request].

Tag synonyms are tags which mean exactly the same thing as another tag. They exist to group variations together.

Depending on the site you're using, the reputation required to suggest tag synonyms varies: on designed sites, it requires 2,500 reputation, and on beta and non-designed sites, it requires 1,250 reputation. Additionally, you must have a score of at least 5 in the master tag in order to suggest another tag to become a synonym of it.

Once suggested, all users with a score of at least 5 in the tag (regardless of reputation) can vote for those suggestions. Synonym suggestions are automatically approved once they reach a vote of +4, and are automatically rejected once they reach a vote of -2.

Additionally, moderators can create tag synonyms as needed and have their suggestions instantly approved. They are the only ones who can remove tag synonyms.
