Thank you for this preview. I'm particularly glad to see that the links that are currently part of the site design (like tags and users) will continue to be part of the design instead of being jammed in there like on SO.
Some of these changes are going to really interfere with my ability to moderate. I realize ...
When you have a reputation of 3000 or more, you gain the ability to cast close votes. When voting to close, you select a reason, and one of those reasons is "exact duplicate".
Until you get to 3000, you can flag a question as a duplicate. Flagging requires a scant 15 reputation.
And as mentioned in Cerran's comment you need at least 50 reputation points to ...
Over almost four years on Stack Overflow, Konrad has earned almost 150k rep. A highly committed Stack Overflow citizen, with 2.5k answers and a mere 60 questions, he's one of those users that made Stack Overflow famous. He has 40(!) accounts across Stack Exchange, eight of which sport >1k rep. He is a moderator on one site.
Is anybody ...
Stealing from this excellent answer by canon.
Adding some text under the icon looks like a great idea:
There's a good reason the suggestion is highly upvoted.
In the interim, it lets people know what the symbols are.
Personally I kinda prefer "Achievements" and the bar chart over the participation trophy there.
I also suspect shifting the non mod/low ...
I used to laugh at people like you. "Timid souls!" I mockingly exclaimed, "No doubt they tremble at their own shadows as well!"
My first introduction to the new top bar came some time ago, when Professor Tunnell left some hastily-drawn sketches laying around in his laboratory. Casually drawn, the lines nevertheless drew one in, their two-dimensional forms ...
For particularly long comment threads I kinda want to know where the invisible comments are before clicking the "show all comments" and, frankly, I often don't want to re-read all the comments when I'm following up on a topic, just recent/new comments.
So I'd go a little further and propose that you put ellipses between comments where there are hidden ...
If you want me to review, then don't light up the review icon if there are no actionable tasks
The number-one complaint I have with the current top bar is the fact that the review counter lights up even when there's nothing at all I can do to make it go away:
So, what's the main outcome of that feature? That I've learned to ignore that part of the top ...
A number of users have complained that the site switcher is in a confusing place.
In addition, the site switcher symbol is confusing.
To try the new top bar, I went to SO (which I never use) and tried to look for the switcher.
It took me over a minute.
I tried clicking the logo in the top left like I'm used to do, and it turned out to be a link.
Some days ago, the spam protection was turned up a notch.
Well, actually, it was repaired. Two weeks ago, we found a bug that for a long time prevented edits from being throttled at all (except for very narrow exceptions).
For the record, I posted this in our internal chat room:
Thanks for proving me right :)
In all seriousness: The throttling was fixed ...
I'm mainly reiterating what Monica Cellio wrote already, but I wanted to include a picture of what would happen to those very sub-optimally placed mod elements. Unfortunately every screenshot in the question seems to assume the full screen usage of Stack Exchange. If not then at least an unobstructed SE browser window. Have a look at my only marginally ...
Show of hands: How many people loathe headers and footers that follow you around as you scroll?
The header isn't even that useful when you're reading a long page, and you can always press Home to warp to the top.
I am not sure if StackExchange follows Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (to be referred to as "WCAG"), but the StackExchange logo and text in the new logo:
fail at both WCAG AA and AAA, on both normal and large text requirements.
The guidance is mostly for text so I can't ramble much about the logo, but the text ("StackExchange") is, ...
Votes Tab is Back from vacation.
It took a long term vacation so it could come back, bigger, stronger and betterer.
We brought it back in a format very similar to the activity stream, clearly you can only see your votes. You can see deletions/undeletions/closures and reopens as well as up/down votes.
One slight open question is how to add a filter that ...
Stack Overflow is a tech savvy community. If users are complaining Recaptchas are too hard to read (I for one can only solve 1 in 10), then the situation is beyond the pale.
The audio captchas have become plain impossible. For example http://picosong.com/w6Fs/ . This site is no longer accessible.
NB. Users with high reputation are seldom asked captchas, ...
Wow, that was horrid. Custom style sheet amended.
Edit: Fixed some bugs. I'm going to maintain it in Gallery of custom styles and/or scripts for the top-bar, so please refer to that version.
(n.b. that version does not include the unrelated & commented styles at the end of the below style sheet.)
Your choice of hamburger
Right now, there are two versions of the SE logo on the top bar:
The one on the left is a quad-burger with the text 'StackExchange' after it. This is a very large area which could be clickable and formerly was.
The one on the right is a tri-burger, similar to the three-line UI element commonly used across applications and ...
Yes, I realize you can refresh and you'll eventually get one that's not impossible. I have to say though, recaptcha is going to stop being a viable option in the near future. Unless eventually the bots are the only ones that can solve them and we only let people in if they get it wrong.
Please make the top bar the same on Stack Overflow and on other sites. I would like consistency between all Stack Exchange sites, including Stack Overflow. I've seen in comments (both comments to the question and to other answers) that there would be issues using the Stack Overflow top bar on all other Stack Exchange sites, so I suggest ...
I don't like the email and password placeholder. Either make the placeholder "Email" and "Password", or get rid of it altogether. It doesn't really add anything useful as is. Your users don't need an example of what an email address should look like, and you certainly don't want to imply that a password might be 12345!
Otherwise it's a good clean ...

The old design was nice, but those heavy, bold numbers added unnecessary weight. With over 280,438,789 views a month on Stack Overflow, that weight was no longer acceptable, particularly considering we're still running off of backup hardware in Oregon. Fortunately, our brave designer-in-chief was able to find numerous small ways to slim down the text without ...
status-wont-fix (See Monica Cellio's answer and/or the followup MSE post.)
My cheese has been moved, and a holographic replica has been left in its place. There used to be a menu in this very spot that looked exactly like this:
And now this graphic does nothing. The new top bar on Stack Overflow moved the site switcher and put something with a completely ...
The new style objectively sucks! ☺ I can tell from some of the pixels and from seeing quite a few voting widgets in my time.
The thinner font makes the vote counts look off-center. Example (colored lines added to demonstrate the pixels are off-center):
The digits are too far to the right:
The digits are too far to the right, and too low:
While the bold ...
If the button says "Vote To Close" when you have super powers, the text is actively misleading. The action is not a vote action, it is a close action. The button should say "Close". That is, I think UX considerations suggest the button should not have its current label.
Shog9, in his answer, says he does not want the two modes distinguished, as voters ...
Sort of, yes.

Back in February, in response to concerns about inconsistency between sites, Oded wrote:

Yet here we are with inconsistent designs across the network.
In response to one of many requests for a dark/black top bar, Pawel wrote:
