Aug 6, 2018 at 3:15 comment added Makoto @OtagoHarbour: I fear that you're not interested in actually broaching a solution, but rather you want to lash out at the people who you feel did you wrong. There's nothing further to discuss with you.
Aug 5, 2018 at 21:37 comment added OtagoHarbour @Makoto. I did exhaustive research and posted all of the relevant code, leaving out the irrelevant parts. I also detailed what tools, systems and versions I was using. It was a C++ question on a programming board. It was a clear question and got a clear answer that could have been useful to several users. I would have gladly left it up and discuss it but downvotes were coming thick and fast with absolutely no explanation. As for "niceness", people were much nicer when they had to face people in person rather than spinelessly hiding behind internet anonymity.
Aug 5, 2018 at 14:36 comment added Makoto @OtagoHarbour: I take umbrage with you calling them "cowards". This is the central issue of the whole "niceness" movement; everyone seems to think that voting is directed or aimed at the person and not the content. You would've done better to have a discussion about the question on Meta to see what needed to be improved as opposed to automatically assuming we were fulfilling a vendetta against you personally.
Aug 5, 2018 at 12:59 comment added OtagoHarbour I posted a question yesterday after being able to find the answer after days of searching the web and trial and error. The question was on-topic and well constructed. I got the answer to my question but also got four downvotes in 10 minutes. The question, and answer would have been a valuable resource but I lost reputation because of four cowards who choose to try to hurt others without fear of repercussion.

Sep 20, 2012 at 5:24 comment added jmort253 Contributing here is awesome, whether it be on SO, meta, or on other SE sites. Just in general, if you're around and see someone who needs help, and you have time to spare, you can help out, but it's definitely not an obligation. We all do, after all, have lives. :) Or at least we'd like to think we do anyway.
Sep 20, 2012 at 5:09 comment added Dave Alperovich maybe im too eager to help. I don't wana kill my entire day doing it. There's work. But a couple ppl came up with seriously clever ideas that helped me in a big way. Now when google send me to SO for an answer, I also scout the forums for stuff I do. I feel a warm fuzzy from giving back.
Sep 20, 2012 at 5:04 comment added jmort253 Clarification: Downvotes aren't rude though. Downvote with extreme prejudice, but not maliciously or punitively, and be polite and constructive in comments. That's my theory on how to make this work.
Sep 20, 2012 at 5:02 comment added jmort253 And the help vampires can sometimes be tricky! They're all nice and thank you immensely for helping them get from point A to point B, but then in their comments they try to get you to then help them get from point B to point C, without even trying themselves. It's like they want you to slowly and iteratively do their entire project for them. :) Giving people the benefit of the doubt, I give some broad advice in my final comment about looking at the docs, politely wish them luck, then go on my way. Some people don't know they're being help vampires, so no need to be rude. :)
Sep 20, 2012 at 4:52 comment added Dave Alperovich I get your point about help vampires. It's annoying to see a question I googled an answer to early that week. Or when somebody expects you to code it all for them. I never took notes on the answers I've found useful that got down-votes for reasons I couldn't understand. This doesn't happen often, but when it does I understand why the rep stayed at 1 -- person never came back.
