@NickCraver: I don't use any such addons which enforce https:// , it automatically defaulted to https for me for that session while the browser was open.. I have restarted the browser and it has gone back to its normal ways - only using http:// by default... I don't know what happened at that point of time :-)

@Nick, any update on this... Just now, while using Ask Ubuntu, I noticed that it defaulted to https:// for me on Firefox 26 (Win 7) but defaulted to http:// on IE 11 (Win 7)... I am not using any such add-ons which enforce https..
