Nov 8, 2017 at 2:51 | comment | added | Monica Cellio | Given that new mods are already contacted with various helpful links (and must accept the mod agreement before they get the new goodies), I think we have ample opportunities to tell them "hey, about those new things in your top bar" without having to add labels to the top bar itself. Labeling the new stuff (other than mod stuff) and not everything is a nice teaching tool.

Oct 12, 2017 at 23:23 | comment | added | Gilles 'SO- stop being evil' | One caveat is that the switch from icons to labels should be based on a network-wide criterion and not a per-site criterion. Otherwise the icons will not be in the same location on all sites.

I think “awards” instead of “achievements” is fine. I also think it would be ok to skip the labels for mod icons, because mods visit the site every day and will quickly adapt to the one or two items, unlike people who visit only when they have a question and can't be expected to have any muscle memory.
Oct 12, 2017 at 23:22 | comment | added | Gilles 'SO- stop being evil' | For reference the previous label proposals for labels were canon's and Journeyman Geek's, but I don't think anyone had suggested removing labels for experienced users before. On the whole, I think that's an acceptable compromise (even though I think a much better way of saving horizontal space would be to remove the reputation and especially the badges — but to partly compensate I'd like my username where the reputation is).

Oct 12, 2017 at 23:01 | comment | added | Catija | I really appreciate this deep dive into the UI... I'm not personally bothered by the inbox and achievements not having labels. I think a big part of the concern I've been hearing is that, since there's no understood symbol for "review" that it may be better to "stop trying to make fetch happen"... I'm interested to see what the poll turns up but without an option for "I abstain in hopes of something else" - admittedly not helpful - I'm not really sure the complaints will stop. Worth pointing out that mods are a varied bunch, we're not all super users.
