I would just do linking the tags inline, like I can currently do [doesnt-exist], without the permission to create it. You might be right that version merging is a problem, but not an unsolvable one - you might even do edits by the community user or something. (And IIRC, renames and synonymisation of question tags already has the problem that the posts are not updated immediately but only on the next edit, then showing up in the history diff). | |

That way users can still filter to the answers that they need. Including the syntax inline as you suggest is somewhat of a nightmare in terms of things like permissions for version creation, version merging, search and filtering, preventing abuse, etc, and is just something that we are not going to do. And I view hiding the feature from users as a negative, not a positive. | |
