Feb 21, 2023 at 13:41 comment added Shadow Wizard Any updates on this project? Is it still alive? Are there stats about how many joined/posted/etc? Thanks.
Sep 14, 2022 at 15:00 comment added Rosie StaffMod Thanks @JourneymanGeek. You are absolutely right -ghost_programmer I don't work on branding or product. Part of the job of a community managers is to communicate/share info from other teams with the community. I do have a background in working with college students which is why I was asked to attend the kickoff Hackathon with product and marketing.

Sep 14, 2022 at 12:54 comment added Journeyman Geek Mod @ghost_programmer Rosie is a community manager with a ton of experience in that - and dealing with the community is a community management role. SE does have product management, branding, and marketing people outside that probably in the backend of this. She's a specialist in dealing with the community.
Sep 13, 2022 at 11:16 comment added user3840170 The close votes are feedback. And it’s the same kind of feedback we give to any other asker who writes overly vague posts. It is also an incentive towards clearer writing: make yourself clear, or you will not get answers. Reversing the close vote by fiat amounts to a tacit admission either that this system does not work, or that Stack Exchange thinks they should not be subjected to it.
Sep 13, 2022 at 10:14 comment added Journeyman Geek Mod its an announcement of something that people need to be aware of, good or bad. Feedback's needed and its better its on meta, where the community has a fair amount of involvement and freedom, than purely on the blog. The feedback's invaluable and closure cuts it off. In the long run, it also makes meta less valuable, and at risk. As a mod, sometimes I need to look out for the best interests of the site, and that involves prodding people to do the right and smart thing.
Sep 13, 2022 at 9:13 comment added user3840170 @JourneymanGeek Why? We close unclear posts all the time. What does it matter that this is a staff post? Rules for thee, not for me?
Sep 13, 2022 at 7:54 comment added Journeyman Geek Mod Downvoting - I can't do anything about, though I'd rather folks express what they think a little more explicitly. This question was closed for being unclear - which eh, shouldn't have happened
Sep 13, 2022 at 7:37 comment added Revious @JourneymanGeek: downvoters are very often acting in a dumb way, it's already years that I remark this point

Sep 1, 2022 at 10:59 comment added Lundin @W.O. If there was an easy solution, we wouldn't have the problem. However, I'm quite sure that bringing more unmotivated students in is not the solution...
Sep 1, 2022 at 10:21 comment added W.O. I don't think that spamming universities with complaints is a viable solution @Lundin Maybe tracking down their mothers might work.
Sep 1, 2022 at 9:48 comment added Lundin So maybe one challenge could be: find a way to block students from posting extreme amounts of horribly poor questions on SO. Maybe an automated system which reports students dumping their homework on the site directly to their university? The large amount of student users on the site is clearly one of the biggest problem we have been facing through the history of SO, so how do we solve it? By bribing more students into using the site, not because they wish to contribute, but because they are getting free pizza?
Aug 31, 2022 at 19:39 comment added Rosie StaffMod @MicheldeRuiter MLH is an international organization as was mentioned by others. At the Hackathon this weekend we had the opportunity to chat with students from all over the world.
Aug 31, 2022 at 18:56 comment added Philippe Despite your staff's assessment that feedback is wanted starting the post out with "This is just and FYI" strongly implies the decision is made and this post is "Just for your information about the decision we made". If the goal is actually education rather than a publicity stunt I think they should go in a special queue thats hackathon centric. Hackathons require quick responses and the OP is unlikely to interact with the question once the hackathon is over.

Aug 31, 2022 at 17:00 comment added Shadow Wizard @MicheldeRuiter my first impression was US only, however according to their About page, MLH is international organization, so I'm not sure, and Rosie didn't reply to a previous comment asking about it.
Aug 31, 2022 at 12:13 comment added Michel de Ruiter Is this US only or meant to be international in any way?

Aug 31, 2022 at 3:00 comment added mickmackusa I hope that it will be explained to this new crop of contributors that any new content that they generate (Q's or A's) will have a very high probability of being redundant on Stack Overflow. If we want to get the best bang from new engagement, we should be asking new contributors to start aggregating pages by narrow topic and then suggest pages which should be closed, merged, deleted, edited, and nominated as the canonical dupe target. If all we are getting is more people generating more content, then curators are going to have even more work to do. I have my suspicions.

Aug 30, 2022 at 13:28 comment added Journeyman Geek Mod I know its amusing to try to, or actually close an official staff post - but the goal here is to get feedback. If its unclear - that's what comments and in these cases, answers are for

Aug 30, 2022 at 7:12 comment added Shadow Wizard @cocomac it's written in this announcement: In the upcoming months students will be encouraged to participate in Q&A on Stack Overflow in addition to other sites on the Stack Exchange Network where they have an interest and knowledge to share. So while the center is SO, they'll also be encouraged to try out more sites.
Aug 30, 2022 at 6:25 comment added This_is_NOT_a_forum OK, "...cultivate communities and teach computer science skills to more than 65,000 students around the world. Aug 29, 2022 at 23:03 comment added cocomac The linked blog post and this post call it 'Stack Overflow Student Ambassador Program", and the web page for it also does that (i.e., refers to SO instead of SE). If this is mainly about SO (which it seems like it is IMO, then why was the announcement not on MSO? Or alternatively, how is this relevant to SE overall as opposed to just SO?

Aug 29, 2022 at 17:40 comment added Shadow Wizard I'm not sure what is the bottom line, or goal, here. Is it to have more people get familiar with Stack Overflow?
