Dec 23, 2010 at 3:09 comment added Shog9 @Kop: if you want it to be symbolic, give them a star or reply with "thanks" or ask for their address and send them a fruitcake. Rep is already symbolic, but in another context; give it too many meanings, and it loses all of them.
Dec 23, 2010 at 2:46 comment added The Unhandled Exception +1 Jeff, not because I agree with your disagreement about mootinator's idea, but for so eloquently describing your philosophy of chat, which I tried to explain but did so much more cruedly.
Dec 23, 2010 at 2:14 comment added TCPMAN.EXE I might get a reputation at work or home for being a [Drunk] if I take too many free drinks at the bar. Perhaps some sort of commendation which costs a small amount of rep to give, and maybe a badge for having received several would be a better metaphor.
Dec 23, 2010 at 1:55 comment added Jeff Atwood @moot drinks are usable only at the bar, unless your workplace allows beers. That's part of the problem with this scheme you're proposing -- stuff from "home" and "work" bleeds over into the bar. It's no longer a third place.
Dec 23, 2010 at 1:34 comment added TCPMAN.EXE If I go to a bar with coworkers, I can certainly buy one I appreciate a drink. This isn't a different reward system from work, as the drink costs money. I don't think my buying someone a drink makes the bar about money.
Dec 23, 2010 at 0:42 comment added Andreas Bonini Even if it's a small amount of rep, even only 1 point? I think the goal is not to gain rep, but to show appreciation to a user. I think the intention is for it to be symbolic rather than actually useful to increase your rep.
