Updating post since I am no longer involved with EE
Aug 12, 2016 at 20:23 comment added JAAD wow never knew such a site existed, never showed up in google why?
Mar 4, 2015 at 21:14 comment added Sampson Read through these comments, couldn't stop saying "Expression Engine" when I read EE... even though I stopped and corrected myself, over and over :)
Oct 10, 2012 at 10:33 comment added kumarharsh @JCL1178 : yes, I thought so too, I mean you guys are in this field for a lot longer, so I think you'd know these stuff better :) and btw, the best thing EE did was 'that hyphen'. Cheers.
Oct 10, 2012 at 1:55 comment added JCL1178 @Harsh You're not clearly understanding the policy and this isn't the place to get into it in great depth :)
Oct 9, 2012 at 9:41 comment added kumarharsh @JCL1178 Then wouldn't it be better to serve different content to the GoogleBot and users instead of making the unsuspecting users pay for something which was only a PAGE-DOWN press away? Show the content as such to the Bot, and lock it off for all unregistered users. As I understand, you used to do this earlier, but have stopped now. FirstClickFree says "In order to successfully crawl your site, Google needs to be able to crawl your content... configure your webservers not to serve the registration page to our crawlers..." or maybe I'm not clearly understanding Google's FCF policy.
Oct 9, 2012 at 3:01 comment added JCL1178 @Harsh Any site that wants to protect their content but still have it listed in Google has to abide by First Click Free which is why you can see EE answers just by scrolling down. EE feels that it puts enough friction in the process so that someone who comes back to EE over and over again will sign up. When EE was surviving on ad revenue and funding, the experience was different.

Jan 2, 2012 at 23:03 comment added Mark Rogers Experts-Exchange should be destroyed because they follow the dark pattern of bait and switch. Google searching for a result that leads to EE lets you think your going to a link with the answer, and then surprise! get out your credit card. Dark pattern companies are parasites.

Dec 17, 2011 at 19:17 comment added JCL1178 @BenBrocka Just curious here. If EE changes the business model and opens up the site, would you ever be willing to try it out? Or is there literally nothing that can be done to change your mind? (If this comment is out of bounds, please tell me and I'll delete it myself).
Dec 17, 2011 at 15:11 comment added Zelda @0A0D that's why Google gives you the option to block sites when you Back button your way out of them! EE no longer exists!

Jun 16, 2011 at 2:14 comment added JCL1178 @Changeling Yes. Contrary to (what may be) popular belief, EE is constantly looking at different systems and different ways to generate revenue. It's just that having been around longer, EE has also tried a lot of the possible models and the current system seems to work best for us. Will it always be this way? I can pretty much guarantee the answer will be no. Can you still use EE for free? Yes! Answer a few questions per month (every two months in reality) and you'll never pay a dime. Write articles if you don't want to answer questions...those are always free for everyone to view...
Jun 16, 2011 at 2:06 comment added Engineer2021 @JCL1178: Have you considered a different business model to counteract SO influence? In college expert-exchange was valuable to helping me with programming problems though I haven't used it in almost 7 years due to the paywall.
Jun 15, 2011 at 23:06 comment added JCL1178 @Changeling. Yes, a couple. 1) All inbound links from Google or Bing do have the full question/answer post visible. You just have scroll (a long way) down to get to it. 2) There is a free (no credit card) registration link which I probably shouldn't post here since this isn't our playground...can you get in touch with me via profile? There's more, but I'm not authorized to be public with it yet, but changes are coming.
Jun 15, 2011 at 22:52 comment added Engineer2021 @JCL1178: Don't take this the wrong way - but DAMN is it annoying to click on an answer the question which is partly listed in Google to find out it is an EE site. That's what drove me to SO. I understand you got to make a buck, but is there any other way to make it a little less frustrating?
May 26, 2011 at 14:36 comment added JCL1178 @squillman. Dude, we ALL do it to some degree or another. Be it sports teams, Mac vs PC, PHP vs ASP.NET or whatever. Humans like to pick a side and then go after the "other" (guilty). But this case seemed like a good, non-flamey way to reach out and finally try to clear the air.
May 26, 2011 at 14:29 comment added JCL1178 Bill, fair point. But when the hate is directed at the platform, the people who are heavily invested and involved from the community can't help but take it personally, to say nothing of the employees. If we used similar language to describe SO the software, I can only imagine a similar feeling and response from YOUR community and the employees.
May 26, 2011 at 14:14 comment added Bill the Lizard "Certainly, the comparative levels of hate from your user base towards ours far exceeds what, if anything, "trashy" has been directed from us to you." I've never seen any hate at all directed at your user base. It's always the platform.
May 26, 2011 at 13:36 comment added Adam Rackis I wish I could give you another +1 for mentioning how a lot of techies equate paid with evil. I've never been able to understand that. Somehow knowledge of software development seems to make people behave silly when it comes to basic economics. See also the response when Redgate started asking people to—gasp—pay $35 for reflector.
May 26, 2011 at 13:14 comment added squillman +1 And as one of the people who has thrown some stones in the past (including a comment on this question which I've now deleted) your response has made me reevaluate my attitude. Thanks for taking the time to post.
May 26, 2011 at 13:03 comment added Benjol +1 for a grown-up response. And as Pekka says on his comment on the question, there is a lot more 'trash talk' here. We need to grow up on that point, and your calm response will help.
May 26, 2011 at 4:06 comment added JCL1178 @Adam...Wasn't saying you specifically :) Just noting that there is a crowd that seems to equate "paid" with "evil" and we don't think that's healthy dialog in the short or long run. As above, I think SO/SE has done some wonderful, impressive things. But EE has value too and having multiple healthy Q&A sites ultimately makes getting answers easier for everyone no matter what the business model is. @Randall...we wish it was a myth but we hope it dies down.
May 26, 2011 at 2:23 comment added Complicated see bio "Levels of hate?" I must be missing all the flame wars because I haven't seen any of this and find it quite surprising that this is even happening. I've only ever heard of the fighting during and after the split between the Joomla and Mambo (listed alphabetically) projects, but that's the only one and it didn't seem to go on for very long as I recall. I do hope this idea of hatred centred around these (and other) helpful web sites is just a myth.

May 26, 2011 at 2:11 comment added Adam Rackis Thanks Jason. For the record, I've never hated EE, as I hope the original question made clear. You guys were a godsend when I was first learning, but somehow SO has been able to do what they've done.
May 25, 2011 at 22:47 comment added JCL1178 I understand and typically I wouldn't have posted it (since I know you guys don't like it, just like we don't like at EE) but we felt that leaving it in there is helpful since this is somewhat of an "official" response.
May 25, 2011 at 22:37 comment added juan I wanted to edit the signature out, but I don't think this is a post to make jokes on. Thank you for your response and for showing us the other side of the coin!
May 25, 2011 at 22:35 comment added JCL1178 Shog9, when you figure it out please, please post video.
May 25, 2011 at 22:21 comment added Shog9 Mod Personally, I yearn for the day when I can light hundred-dollar baths with caviar.
May 25, 2011 at 22:21 comment added JCL1178 Yes. Feel free to sign up for an EE account, let it ride for a while and then cancel via email to test :)
