Stack Exchange releases "data dumps" of all its publicly available content roughly every three months via archive.org, and also makes that information queryable over the Internet at the Stack Exchange Data Explorer (SEDE) (updated weekly, on Sunday). Over time, as new features and other bits of data are introduced to Stack Exchange sites, the "anatomy" of the data dump is likely to change.

About this list:
- foreign key fields are formatted as links to their parent table
- italic table names are found in both the Data Dump on Archive.org as well as in the SEDE
- if a column is optional or nullable, when it is NULL, it won't appear as an attribute in data dump /
<row ...>
.

You find in Posts
all non-deleted posts. PostsWithDeleted

Parameter | Data Type | Default | Description |
---|---|---|---|
@SQLCommand | nvarchar(4000) | The SQL statement to run | |
@IncludeMainSites | bit | 1 | Include all non-meta sites |
@IncludeMetaSites | bit | 1 | Include all meta sites |
@IncludeMainMeta | bit | 1 | Include StackExchange.Meta |
@CollectResultsForMe | bit | 1 | For standard SELECT queries, this will attempt to put each database's results into a #temp table |
@ErrorOnSkippedSites | bit | 0 | Set this to 1 if you want execution to halt in the event any site is missing due to transition change |
Timestamps
All timestamps are UTC
, default format: yyyy-MM-dd hh:mm:ss.fff
(stored with three digits of millisecond precision as implemented by SQL Server, making the "end" of a day 23:59:59.997
).
Example of conversion current time to PST
(including DST) using At Time Zone
:
SELECT GetDate() At Time Zone 'UTC' At Time Zone 'Pacific Standard Time';
The time zones do not have great names, as they imply that you would have to use 'Pacific Daylight Time'
and know something about DST. To list available time zones: SELECT * FROM sys.time_zone_info

For PostNoticeTypes, there appears to be two
classId
s other than the mentioned 1, 2, & 4. Stack Overflow additionally as 8 and 0, it seems most (all?) other sites have just the 8. Is there an official name for this class of notices?– zcoop98Commented Apr 2, 2021 at 22:42 -
1@zcoop98 I've run a check and you're right, only 1 site has 0 as classid. I checked but can't find info on what the name of those classid's is. Feel free to open a question to get that name. Here is the answer meta.stackexchange.com/a/278150 that announces the addition of those tables. Surprisingly enough I was the requestor to get those tables added in the first place.– rene ModCommented Apr 22, 2021 at 16:51

Why is there UserName in Post and Comment? Is it to avoid a join? Are the username entries in posts and comments updated if user updates the username? Commented Jun 1, 2021 at 8:09
-
1@chaosifier Username is populated when a User is deleted. So once the Userid or OwnerUserId would be set to null the Usename field gets populated with the last known name (although most of the time the username is reset to default first)– rene ModCommented Jun 1, 2021 at 8:17

How can you tell if a vote is for a comment or for a post? It seems like the schema only handles votes for posts.– Alex JCommented Jun 10, 2021 at 19:23
-
2@AlexJ Comments only have upvotes and those are kept in the field ` Score` . There is no separate table for CommentVotes. So the votes(votetypeid in (2,3)) table has the rows for up and downvotes of posts alone.– rene ModCommented Jun 10, 2021 at 19:41

@rene Interesting, what keeps a user from making multiple upvotes on a given comment? How is the vote on a comment related back to the user that makes it?– Alex JCommented Jun 10, 2021 at 20:05

The Schema Visualized The Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) above was constructed using the data found in the information_schema.columns table. (Thank you to ashleedawg for paring the table down to its bare essentials).
All the table, column and key information were compiled into a SQL script using python3. The results were cross validated with the accepted answer above, and the few idiosyncratic foreign key formations left over were hardcoded in at the end.)
The ERD was then reverse engineered using dbschema.
Please find the script that wrote the SQL and other related files in my GitHub repository.
The interactive HTML version of the ERD is posted here: https://sedeschema.github.io/

@leerssej It is not explained in the provided reference what the dashed/solid line styles stand for. At least I couldn't find this. Commented Jul 4, 2023 at 0:26

-
@leerssej Thanks, however the linked answer does not explicitly mention a line being solid or dashed: "ER Diagrams were originally used only to represent the ER model. The ER model does not use foreign keys to represent relationships. It uses lines between boxes. The lines have some kind of indicator for cardinality at either end or both ends. Sometimes, a relationship will be indicated separately by a diamond." What is confusing to me is whether dashing conveys additional information to symbols at the ends of a line or not. ... [1/n] Commented Jul 7, 2023 at 23:32
-
You seem to imply that dashing is an indicator of cardinality and should be considered together with the end symbols. This agrees with dbSchema documentation, although it does not show exactly the same notation you used in the picture (you have "P", "Z", or "1" at the ends; the docs show Crow's foot and notches). ... [2/3] Commented Jul 7, 2023 at 23:32
-
On the other hand, this shows that dashed (non-solid) line indicates something on top of those symbols; something related to identifying or non-identifying relationships. This variety of notations and possibilities make the topic confusing for a non-expert, and it would be great to know at least something with certainty. [3/3] Commented Jul 7, 2023 at 23:32
-
2@paperskilltrees Ah! Now I understand your question: what is the difference between the dashed lines and the solid lines? Thank you for the clarification! Maybe this stackoverflow.com/a/16697896/5088194 or this can help stackoverflow.com/a/16676282– leerssejCommented Jul 10, 2023 at 3:28
