I wanted to add a link containing "A*" to an answer. It had the link at the bottom and I wondered why he didn't link to A* normally. But when I tried it wouldn't show up as a URL in the preview, so I guess that's why it was added as plain text in the answer instead.

This works OK so long as you don't try to do it "raw":

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A*_search_algorithm

won't work, whereas 

[link][1]

  [1]: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A*_search_algorithm

or

[link](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A*_search_algorithm)

will: link, link.
